The media industry has been my life, man and boy, starting from the bottom rung as a cub reporter on a weekly paper in the UK aged 16.
Today I’m the Chief Executive Editor of the multi-award winning Times of Oman, transforming in three years a print title that had lost touch with its audience to capture readership and revenue market share.
We are the outright leader in the digital space whether online, social or video.
Prior to that I focused on the digital efforts of The National in Abu Dhabi, helping to reshape the print-only/digitally-hostile newsroom into a team in which online was everyone’s responsibility, boosting its audience, its social media presence and its pageviews.
It’s been a 28-year journey, working for regional newspapers and national news wires and agencies in the UK plus national titles in The Bahamas, the United Arab Emirates and now here in Oman.
Awards-wise in the past three years we’ve been honoured five times twice in the World Association of Newspapers’ Middle East Digital Awards (2016 and 2017) and we took the global honour for Data Visualisation in the 2016 World Digital Media Awards of Wan-Ifra (the first time any title from the Middle East has won at the global level).
There has also been major success in the Society for News Design (SND) and the European Newspaper Awards 2016.
I now also contribute to panel discussions and presentations at Wan-Ifra conferences, most recently in Dubai, and soon in April at the Publish Asia conference in Kuala Lumpur.
